Overview
Diabetes mellitus refers to a group of diseases that affect how the body uses blood sugar (glucose). Glucose is an important source of energy for the cells that make up the muscles and tissues. It's also the brain's main source of fuel.
Our mobile app will be focusing on people with type 1 diabetes (T1DM).
Most people with type 1 diabetes struggle with:
Emotional health management because T1DM can occur at a young age.
A sense of community because T1DM is rarer.
Committing to a completely new lifestyle.
Challenge
How might we provide adults, newly diagnosed with diabetes, with a platform where they can get started with self-care management and get the support they need?
In collaboration with Meredith A. DeZutter and Lindsey M. Philpot, PhD, MPH from Mayo Clinic, our team will delve into the intricacies of the challenges of having T1DM, aiming to devise potential solutions.
Our primary objective is to develop a mobile app-based solution that can effectively assist diabetic patients in their everyday lives.
Process
Research & Analysis: We conducted interviews with people diagnosed with diabetes and analyzed numerous mobile apps, as well as diabetes-specific products, to understand how patients' pain points and needs. We also studied competitor apps and industry trends to gather insights.
Information Architecture: Based on our research findings, we organized the app's contents, prioritizing features and information according to the patients' needs.
Wireframing & Prototyping: We created wireframes to visualize the app layout and navigation, iteratively refining them based on our professor's and mentors' feedback. Afterward, we built a high-fidelity, interactive prototype to test the design.
Usability Testing: We conducted usability tests in order to identify strengths and areas for improvement in the design. Based on the feedback, we made necessary adjustments to the design.
Visual Design & Style Guide: We developed a design system consistent with our app, including color schemes, typography, and iconography.
Takeaways
This semester-long team project was very insightful and a great learning experience designing for the healthcare space. There were many parts in this project that we as a team could not explore more deeply due to time constraints. However, now, we understand that living with type 1 diabetes can be a challenge, and GlucoTrend was created in those people in mind.
With features like auto-tracking & visualized data, streamlined appointment tracking and chat services, infobyte format education, and community forums & challenges, our app empowers you to take control of your diabetes self-care management plan so you can live your best life.
